Comics For Kids

Occasionally, our social media alter-egos crossover with people running projects that you take a personal interest in. Obviously, I run into a LOT of people on twitter all running cool projects. A lot of the time, the projects are personal to them, or a way of getting their own comic book out to the world. I have recently come across a project that is not about Michael Whitehead getting his own comic out to the world, but it is about getting unwanted comics, or comic’s people are willing to donate, into the hands of kids who may not be able to access comics or graphic novels. The projects called “Comics for Kids”, and although it does not have a big flashy website and comic publishers/creators supporting the project yet, I am hoping me doing a small focus on this might help broaden the audience.

Encouraging children to read comic books is something I highly approve of myself, on more than one occasion I have let my kids read comics as a way of expanding the knowledge of literature beyond mere words on a page. When I learned what Michael was trying to do, I thought this was an amazing idea, and wanted to help in any way I could.

What Michael proposes to do is, ask people to donate unwanted comic books, or any comics you are willing to donate to this cause, and give children the chance to read and love comic books they may not be able to get themselves. If you do not have comics to donate, or you live overseas, as I do, you can also send digital code’s, which also help this great cause, or you can donate cash to help give kids today the chance to read amazing works of fiction as we all do.

As you can tell, this is something I highly approve of, and I cannot recommend this great project to enough people.

I have had a bit of a chat with “Comics for kids” founder Michael Whitehead. Here is what he had to say.

Hey Michael, comics for kids is such an amazing thing for someone to do. How did you come up with this great idea?

I thought back to my childhood and the great memories that my love of comics has brought to my life. Comics opened my mind to a world that a child growing up in a small town in Mississippi would never have been able to experience without them. I gave a few comics to my friends son and he contacted me wanting to know where he could find more. The answer to the question shocked me. It is an 80 mile round trip to be able to buy comics in Mississippi. The direct market basically, took comics out of the hands of kids. I want to help change that. I want kids all over the United States to be able to read comics like I was able to. When I was a child comics were sold at 5 different places in my small town. So that is why I created “Comics For Kids”

Obviously, this is something that is personal to you, is this something that would take over your personal time, or is the plan to do this full time?

Well right now this is something that takes up most of my free time. It is my mission to help kids love to read comics. Their is nothing else I would rather be doing. I would love to be able to do this full time but for now it is a one person operation.

If it takes off is this something you want to take internationally?

I would never turn down a child that requests comics, but with International shipping costs being so expensive we are just going to focus on the kids in the United States. I will add this, if I had donations from outside of the United States I would use those funds to ship comics globally.

I personally think comic’s publishers would be crazy not to get on board with something like this, is that something you would like to have as part of the cause?

Absolutely! I have contacted all of the major comic book publishers and they have offered no support at this point. We get 100% of our support from comic fans and independent creators. I could not do this without them.

I truly hope that comics for kids takes off, and truly believe this could be a global thing. I only hope all the other people reading this will pay attention and donate whatever they can. Thank you Michael, for making the world a slightly better place.

Thank you my friend for the opportunity to help spread the word about Comics For Kids. If anyone would like to help with our cause please send comics to

A Special #FF Guest Spot

Another guest spot this week from my very good friend Kyle. He is the twitter legend we all know, especially for his support of creator owned comics and underground creators. This guys passion for the comics industry is very well known, and to be honest this post i hope will get a lot of people noticed. I’m going to post this exactly as this man sent it to me, simply because I think its pretty awesome. Check it out:

FREElance Artist Shout Outs

By: @ComicsKyle

I like the thrill of the hunt

I sit at my computer with a hot cup of coffee and scope out tweets and art, all with the hope of finding that artist or writer that you may have never heard of. Checking out twitter feeds and blogs followed by as little as 5 people.

Kind of like a talent scout, except I’m scouting for myself, and I guess now for you too.

I like my creators to be free from the corporate mayhem that seems to always be backing some sort of agenda that will bring in; yes you guessed it, bigger bucks!

It just doesn’t feel natural when I read some of those books, where’s the love, yo?

A creator chasing dreams and bringing peace to their own soul by creating what they want and living with the decisions that they’ve made is where it’s at! The freelance artist is my celebrity.

I love Indie and naturally I want to preach the beauty of the Indie creator. That’s what’s inside of me and I tend to be a bit militant about the things I love.

So here are some artists that I think you’ll really enjoy. I myself personally vouch that you will not go wrong by following these awesome mofo’s! Trust me!

So here are some of my favorites that you may or may not be aware of.

Ricardo Venancio @PressV is a creator that I can’t stop talking about. One look at his site and it’s hard to understand how in the hell you’ve missed this talent.  I particularly love the way Ricardo sees things and his ability to put it on paper is really awe inspiring. Not seeing as in, “Oh see that chair, I can draw it really realistically…” But seeing! His interpretation of things is deep and beautiful.  Big BIG fan of @PressV!

Another gem you may not know about is Jesse Hamm. I spent some time going through this man’s work online and was completely floored. The fact that he’s not a household name makes me lose faith in all those big publishers out there. He has portraits that are realistic, and then he goes and rocks the comic style art while filling it with his style and swag. But just like a slap chop commercial that’s not all! This guy can cartoon with the best of them; had me laughing out loud more often than not. He’s both funny and witty. To take that sort of personality and the ability to blend it with his own vision and style is really inspiring to me. This dude is extremely gifted. His twitter handle is @jesse_hamm and this is his site

I really hope you’re clicking these links as you go. How the hell have these guys gone un-noticed?

You may have heard of Logan Faerber, you may have not. But somehow, he has fewer than 500 follows on twitter? Not enough people outside the industry know about this dude, which is criminal because he’s so awesome at what he does. This dude is working out of my home city and his art is overflowing with his style, and it’s a style so unique and in my opinion it’s very addictive. I’d love to see him take a major comic character and just run with it! @LoganFaerber is sooo awesome. Check his work out here  *NOW, before you do make sure you have a pillow under your chin because your jaw is going to hit the floor.

Next is a man named Andy Bloor. What I love about him is that he’s so incredibly versatile. His colors and the art that comes from hand is the kind that takes you to another place. Just like those Sunday morning cartoons fam! I’m going to follow this guy very closely and I think you will too after you check his site out. @AndyBloor ANDYMATION: The blog of Andy Bloor <- what an awesome blog name, am I right? I know I am.

I’m a big fan of Scott Kowalchuk too. His art is filled with good vibes and a very consistent style. He’s yet another guy whose name should be talked about constantly from the comic market. Check it! @skottkowalchuk

Last but not least is Andrew Maclean. I love this guy’s work… I find myself debating sometimes whether or not to tell him how awesome his work is because I want to do it on everything he posts. I want this guy creating, not jumping off a bridge because he’s got a fan saying “Awesome” or “Nice!!!” to everything he posts. Big BIG fan of this guy!!! Checkout his deviant art page here and follow him on Twitter right away @Andrew_MacLean

Now, I could list at least ten more creators/artists that I could wish for you to show some love too, but for now I want to let these guys shine.

I have sooo much love for the indie world and I really want to share the treasures I find. I would love to see these guys run wild with some big name characters and continue with their completely unrestrained creativity.

Maybe one day DC and Marvel will smarten up and start letting some of these guys run wild with their characters…

HEY!!! If you know your art you will have realized that most of these names are part of an elite group called Brand New Nostalgia. I’d be an ass if I didn’t throw them a shout out. Their Twitter handle is @B_NewNostalgia and the website ->

If you love art, then you need to be following these folks.

So that’s it until next time fam! Stay Happy and keep reading comics!”

I hope all of these people are getting the follows they deserve. I know some of them most people are unaware of, myself included. I’m clicking these links even as I’m posting this. I know Kyle would not give these people shout outs if they weren’t awesome. Everyone should also be following Kyle’s Blog on

Thanks Kyle for the awesome blog spot. I hope this is the first of many more to come, and maybe I can return the favour one day.

As ever please leave your comments, and get in touch with Kyle and me on twitter, you know we like to talk comics.

Dynamite comics

Throughout the past few months, I have been picking up more comics than I ever did before. I used to only pick up a few books each month. I began to open my mind to publishers other than the big 2, and as we all know by now I’m all for the smaller comics companies putting out the best work. I then discovered Dynamite comics.

I slowly picked up a few of their comics, other than the odd issue I picked up randomly, I didn’t get too many. Then I discovered a pulp hero called “The Shadow” was about to relaunch with a new issue 1 and a new creative team which I got on the basis of the brilliant covers. I loved the story, and I realised that they had another pulp hero about to relaunch in much the same way. Needless to say “The Spider” was a smash for me personally. The writing and the art both played a huge part in this becoming a personal favourite of mine instantly, along with “The Shadow” they quickly became must-haves on my list every month.

This really made me notice Dynamite a lot more. They were putting out some awesome creations almost on a weekly basis. Started to make me think that I should be picking up some other book. Characters that I was unfamiliar with at first. Then another book called “Prophecy” which was a crossover of some of the most iconic franchises dynamite own. Vampirella, Red Sonja, Dracula, and Pantha. This only makes me want to read more of these characters.

With the upcoming releases of "Peter Cannon Thunderbolt" and "Damsels" they show no signs of slowing down on their mission to bring us some of the most amazing comic stories us comics fans will ever read. Many of these comics span many different times and many different parts of the world. From the vast middle earth style lands of sandpoint in "Pathfinder", to New York as we know it today in "The Spider", to globe trotting of the 1900's in "The Shadow" and just about everywhere in between. They really engage the reader in many different times and places that give you a great experience when reading their comics.

The writing in some of these books is brilliant. The art in these books and in particular some of the amazing covers provided, by some of the true legends in the industry, are on another level. With maybe 4 issues per book, you can make the decision which particular legend you are going to go for each week/month.

I promise you that if you take a chance on at least one Dynamite comic, you will see that most of the comics you enjoy each month come from them in no time.

The Mighty Titan

I first discovered Joe Martino’s work after being in contact with him about Shadowflame and Ripperman. I got the books digitally and I was always speaking to Joe regarding his next project. He was always very secretive about the next comic adventure, but he promised it was a very personal story to him. After seeing a few teasers of art creations and the title, he started slowly releasing things through both twitter and Facebook. Eventually after some time, and much excitement, the kickstarter project was revealed. “The Mighty Titan” needs your help. As many of you know I am a big supporter of creator owned comics and comics that may not get the coverage they want, and in most cases deserve. The official press release for “The Mighty Titan” read like this:
The Mighty Titan is on Kickstarter – JGM Comics releases its newest book for funding on crowd funding site. JGM Comics is trying something new. It is releasing its newest title on Kickstarter. Joe Martino’s new book The Mighty Titan takes Joe’s cancer experience and wraps it in a superhero shell. Writer/Creator Joe Martino said “The Mighty Titan is my newest creation that essentially takes my cancer (and other) experiences and wraps them in a superhero shell. This isn’t autobiographical. I have researched and talked to other cancer survivors to try and get the feeling of what other people have experienced.” JGM is using this as a pre-order engine for their new mini-series and has rewards that range from the First issue to original art from the book. You could even star in the book. The Mighty Titan is a 5 issue mini-series that boasts the talents of Luca Cicchitti, Cory Smith, Jeff Austin, Keith J. Betancourt and Johnny Lowe. Issue one has an amazing cover by Industry Legend Jerry Ordway and is colored by Danielle Alexis St Pierre. Please see the The Mighty Titan Kickstarter campaign at the following link; JGM Comics is a publisher of Shadowflame, Ripperman, John Orlando’s FHA-Q and New Age Tales of Alternate Adventures. They have been publishing on and off since 1996.

As you can read, this has a very personal story through out for Joe. This also brings you into the mindset slightly of the writer/creator as he tries to express his pain, and the pain of others, through his latest superhero creation. It is this that gives the story such a unique feel, because you know that the person writing it has actually felt these feelings. The book it’s self it’s still in development, with a massive group of very talented people putting art to Joes writing. Joe has been kind enough to give me a couple of exclusive pages. The first 2 pages of issue 1 inked look incredible, and even the sneak peak I got at 3-4 pencilled were amazing. I can tell the effort that is going into this comic is going to pay of, for us as fans, but also this could be JGM comics biggest release yet.

Here Are the exclusive pages 1 and 2 from issue 1, that I think you will agree they look pretty awesome.

I personally will be backing this comic in which ever ways I can, which includes my financial contribution. I really hope that all you guys can do the same. If you can’t back financially then at least share your interests with all your followers. With all our help, Joe can release “The Mighty Titan” into the comic book world we all love. I’m certain that you will regret not being part of this creation. Even if you are just sharing it with your friends so that they might see this incredible opportunity, then all support is appreciated (I speak on behalf of Joe of course, and if my article is your discovery of “The Mighty Titan” then I thank you on my behalf also)
I know all this sounds like I’m fishing for a job at JGM comics, or that I’m getting something in return, but that’s not the case. This truly is a kickstarter project that I personally want to help make it to funding. Not only for the fact that we all get an amazing comic book creation, but I know how personal this story is to Joe. I for one feel I would be upset with the fact that this project may not get the funding it needs through lack of knowledge about it. So consider this my plea, I want all of you reading this to back this comic project, with whatever you can. Even if you can’t put any money in, spread the word. Help get this comic book to the level it needs to be at, to be unleashed into the world.

I urge all of you people to visit this link and pledge your support to this amazing cause. To be honest once you check out the rewards alone, you will want to get involved, but read the page and you will get a small glimpse at how much this project means to Joe Martino. It truly is moving to read his words and you can almost feel the emotion he is putting into this project.

Please visit the kickstarter page by clicking HERE, also you can like The Mighty Titan on Facebook.

You can also speak to the man himself Joe Martino via his Twitter account, and feel free to ask him questions about stuff, he really is a very cool guy.

Please leave your comments, and also contact me via my twitter page, and please check out this project.

Comics fans rule

Just as small post, I was thinking earlier that at the moment, through all comics mediums this really is the best time to be a comics fan. Honestly I can’t remember a week that hasn’t included a new number one issue, or a new relaunch of an existing character. My obvious prime example for the relaunch, is Batman.
I have not been so into a story arc for a long time. I honestly think that Scott Snyder has made history, not only in batman but throughout the whole mythology surrounding the dark knight. Not too many writers in recent time have introduced an enemy into the batman villain hall of fame, as Snyder has with his court of owls. Not only that but the history altering revelations that have recently occurred during issue 10, no spoilers in case you have been living under a rock and haven’t read it yet, but another introduction into batman not only completely changes the game, but also adds another branch to the origins of the Wayne family that changes the way you think about Batman. Scott Snyder was made to write batman, may he carry on for a long time!

There has also been some completely new stories released, such as saga, and Americas got powers to name a few that are currently some of my favourites. The combinations of great art, and brilliant writing have made the current time, not only the most fun, but some of the most interesting. With all these current relaunched and new books being introduced comic book pull lists larger every single week, but also people are still picking up their previous books on top, with the release of spawn #220 and the impending release of the walking dead #100, the books that have always been a must for most of us are still keeping up with the new guys.

Not only are comics slowly becoming more and more popular, but they are now so much more influential across all other forms of entertainment. The walking dead tv shows, and even to a certain extent the big bang theory, on the small screen bring the geek culture to a much broader audience. To the current cinema release schedule looking more and more like a comic shop release list, and with excitement still brewing for the amazing spiderman movie, and of course the dark knight rises, and even there is a buzz beginning to occur for the new dredd movie. These are all bringing the stories we know and love to a much larger group of people, that maybe otherwise wouldn’t have known such stories without seeing them at the cinema.

So to sum up this time, right now, is the greatest time to be a comic book fan, the industry as it stands now, makes geeks like me and you the coolest people in the planet. This really is the time to introduce all your family and friends to the comics you love, because maybe they will be more interested than you think!

So with all the hype after “The Avengers” movie (or “Avengers Assemble”) to us in the uk, sort of make you think that Hollywood may finally be catching on that the movie adaptations of comic books and graphic novels is big business, and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only person to have this opinion but this makes me feel like studios are finally listening to what people want, (Guerilla’s movie #HootHoot) but all the films that have and will come out this year that are influenced by the industry we all know will take over the world (may be sooner than we all thought.) is making people want to go to the cinema again, and I really like that thought!

I know some movies should have been left at the first outing and not ever touched again,

But even as I write this I wanna tell you all I kinda liked the first one, and still haven’t even watched this yet so I still will watch it but it should have been left alone!

Then we had the ultimate team of superhero movie that there has ever been (until justice league*warner pay attention*) and I don’t want to get into reviewing this film or anything like that, just know that I really liked the film it was awesome I don’t think Joss Whedon could have done any better, and any other director wouldn’t have even come close to the spectacle this movie is

And also I just wanna say that the movie was great and I couldn’t have asked for anything more but it still didn’t stand up to “The Dark Knight” and I’m pretty sure anyone reading this knows me and in that you all know that the anticipation and the excitement the is building around “The Dark Knight Rises” is getting a little bit intense and although the avengers movie has done incredibly well at the box office I think even The Avengers and the whole of marvel will be at the cinema on or very near to July 20th!

I also am quite excited to see “The Amazing Spider-man” spidey has always been a personal favourite of mine, and I think stan lee’s greatest creation and this new take on Peter Parker is very intriguing and I have to say I think will be a massive success and one of the surprise hits of the year.

However I also feel that another huge movie potentially is going to be the reboot of a film that I think was pretty cool in the first place even though Stallone was in it! I can’t wait to see “Dredd” and I hope it is gonna be as awesome as I hope because judge dredd is an amazing character and I just hope they can do him justice, but judging from what we have seen so far and the images emerging in pretty confident that it will be awesome

Please remember that all this is just my opinion and I was just writing down my own thoughts! I’m sure people will disagree (especially with my dark knight better than avengers comment) but I’m pretty sure you all know where I’m gonna be spending my money on July 20th I will be at the midnight show, and I will not shut up about it for day’s!!!!!!

Please tell me your thoughts and comments

An introduction to me

So hello, my name is Jason Webb and this is gonna be my blog, I don’t know what I’m gonna do on here but I’ll give it a go. I suppose for my first post I should write a bit about me just because thats what people do isn’t it.(this might read like my twitter profile but I’ll put a bit more on here!)

So I am 26, and I am married to the love of my life, her name is Emma Webb (obviously) she is my whole world we have been together for a while, we were engaged and living together within 6 months (i just know she was the one) and we have been married since the 6th of November 2010, I could not be without her (and she embraces my geek which makes her the most perfect woman in the world!) I love you baby, I know you gonna read this!

We have 3 beautiful girls Emily, Lily and Taylor they are the most amazing kids I’ve ever met, they mean so much to me, and without my little family I would be lost, my girls always are so good, they love to watch films and read and draw superheroes they are into it as much as I am, so the fact that I can share that with them too is so awesome!

I come from a little town called Bedworth in England, that is about as much as I can say about where I live because that’s about all that’s interesting round here @blmoreton will tell you the same!

My work is pretty cool, I am a support worker/carer for adults with learning disabilities, I have been doing it for 6 years now, and truly people say they love their jobs, and most of them lie, but I honestly do love my job, I feel like I help others, and that is awesome, my own little bit of hero.

Anyone reading this will know that I read comics a lot, and I love the whole culture of comic book geek, I always was a geek but not as much as I am now, and all the fellow geeks know there ain’t a better group of people to be round! To have so many people share your interests is a very cool feeling, anything I wanna know I go to the twitter feed.

This blog I am just going to do some reviews of anything I feel might be interesting, which will probably be connected to comic books in some way, and if I want to just put my opinion out there then I will do that too, I hope you all enjoy my writing, it will be done as and when I can update it, don’t know how often, but I will.

Hope this interests you all,
